How Many Stair Noses Do I Need? (Quick Calculator Guide)

By FloorMatch Team3 min read

The Simple Rule: One Per Step

You need one stair nose for each step in your staircase. Count every individual step — each one gets its own piece.

Don't Forget the Top Step

The top step (where the landing or upper floor meets the stair opening) is technically the most important one to cover. If you miss the top step, the raw edge of your LVP floor is exposed. Count it.

Landings

If your staircase has a landing (a flat platform mid-staircase), the landing itself does not need a stair nose — it is a flat surface that can be treated like regular flooring. However, the step going into the landing from below and the step going from the landing to the upper level both need stair noses.

Open-Side Stairs

If one or both sides of your stairs are open (not against a wall), the return pieces count as your stair nose for those steps. Left-return pieces count as one stair nose. Double-return pieces also count as one.

Example: Standard 13-Step Staircase

  • 12 interior steps: 12 stair noses
  • 1 top step (landing transition): 1 stair nose
  • Total: 13 stair noses

Buying Extra

We recommend ordering one or two extra pieces as a buffer. Cutting errors, shipping damage, or future repairs will be much easier if you have a spare piece that matches your floor.
