Do I Need a Stair Nose on the Top Step?
Yes, You Need a Stair Nose on the Top Step
The top step — where your LVP floor meets the staircase opening — is arguably the most important step to cover. Without a stair nose here, you have a raw, exposed edge of LVP flooring sitting at the edge of an opening, which is both unsightly and structurally vulnerable.
Why the Top Step Is Different
On every other step in your staircase, the stair nose is covering the front edge of a tread. On the top step, the stair nose is covering the edge of your actual LVP floor where it terminates at the stair opening.
This edge is subject to: - Foot traffic stepping onto and off the stair - Lateral stress as people push off the step - Potential chipping or cracking if left unprotected
How the Top Step Stair Nose Is Installed
The stair nose on the top step is installed with the same adhesive-and-press method as every other step. The key difference is that it sits flush with the surrounding floor and covers the floor's raw edge.
Make sure the stair nose for the top step is the same color and profile as the rest of your stair noses so the entire staircase has a consistent look.
Measuring the Top Step
Measure the top step the same way as every other step: clear width from wall to wall (or wall to baluster). Order the same length as your other stair noses for a consistent appearance.
