Flush vs. Overlap Stair Nose: What Profile Do You Need?
Why Stair Nose Profile Matters
Not all stair noses are shaped the same. The profile — the cross-sectional shape of the piece — determines how it fits against your stair tread and LVP flooring edge. Choosing the wrong profile can result in a piece that sits unevenly, rocks, or creates a trip hazard. Understanding the two most common profiles will help you order correctly.
What Is a Flush Stair Nose?
A flush stair nose is designed to sit flat against the top of the stair tread with no raised lip or overhang. The nosing edge curves down and forward, but the top surface of the piece is essentially level with the floor and tread surface.
Flush profiles work well when: - Your LVP flooring meets the stair tread at the same height - You prefer a low-profile, modern look - Your stair tread is solid wood or an existing flat surface
What Is an Overlap Stair Nose?
An overlap stair nose (also called a cap-over or overlay profile) has a top section that extends over the edge of the stair tread. This overhang is designed to cover the exposed edge of the LVP plank where it terminates at the top of the step.
Overlap profiles work well when: - Your LVP flooring runs to the edge of the stair and you need to cover that raw edge - You have a thicker LVP (5mm or more) and need extra coverage - You are installing without a flush subfloor at the stair edge
How to Determine Which Profile You Need
The easiest way to figure out which profile you need: look at how your LVP floor meets the top step. If the LVP plank ends with a raw edge exposed at the stair nosing location, you likely need an overlap profile. If the floor meets a finished edge and you simply need a trim piece to cover the nose of the step, a flush profile may be appropriate.
When in doubt, order a sample and test the fit before purchasing full-length pieces.
