Why Does My LVP Stair Nose Not Match My Floor?
Reason 1: You Ordered a Generic Stair Nose
The most common cause of a mismatch is ordering a generic stair nose from the trim aisle at a hardware store. Generic trim pieces are designed to approximate common colors — they are not color-matched to a specific LVP product. If your floor is any distinctive color, a generic piece is unlikely to match well.
Solution: Order a color-matched stair nose from FloorMatch using your specific LVP brand and SKU.
Reason 2: Lighting Differences
LVP and stair noses can look different under different types of light. A piece that looks like a perfect match under fluorescent store lighting may look different under natural daylight or warm indoor light.
Solution: Compare the sample and your floor plank in the actual lighting conditions of your staircase. Morning natural light, afternoon light, and evening artificial light may all look slightly different.
Reason 3: The LVP Has Faded or Changed
If your LVP flooring has been installed for a while, it may have faded slightly from UV exposure, foot traffic, or cleaning products. A brand-new stair nose matched to the original color may appear slightly brighter or fresher than aged flooring.
Solution: Order a sample and compare it to your existing floor in the actual staircase location before ordering full pieces.
Reason 4: Wrong Sheen Level
LVP comes in matte, satin, and semi-gloss finishes. If your stair nose has a different sheen level than your floor, it will look mismatched even if the color is identical.
Solution: When submitting a custom order, note the sheen level of your floor (matte, satin, or gloss) so we can match it as closely as possible.
Reason 5: It Was Never Going to Be a Perfect Match
Even the best color-matched stair nose is not an exact clone of your floor plank. LVP design films are printed with repeat patterns, and individual planks vary slightly. A stair nose will have an average match to the floor, not a plank-perfect match.
Solution: Set realistic expectations and order a sample to verify the match before purchasing full-length pieces.
