What Is a Double-Open Stair Tread?
What Does "Double-Open" Mean?
A double-open stair tread (also called a double-return stair tread) is a stair nose piece with finished end caps on both the left and right sides. It is designed for staircases that are exposed on both sides — not against a wall on either the left or the right.
When Are Stairs "Double-Open"?
Stairs are double-open when they float in the middle of a space without any wall on either side. This is common in: - Open-concept living rooms where a staircase serves as a design element - Split-level homes where the staircase is visible from multiple directions - Commercial or modern residential construction with floating stair designs
What the Double-Return End Caps Do
Without end caps, the left and right ends of each stair tread show a raw, cut edge. The double-return end caps wrap around both sides, providing a clean, furniture-grade finish on both ends of every step.
Measuring for Double-Return Treads
Measure the clear width of your stair as you would for any stair nose — from the leftmost edge to the rightmost edge of the tread. Order the next length up from your measurement. The end caps will cover any overhang.
